Dataset Summary
| Title | Quorum sensing rewires membrane vesicle protein cargo to promote antibiotic persistence in Streptococcus mutans |
| Description | The CSP-ComDE quorum-sensing (QS) system of Streptococcus mutans, a human oral pathogen, is recognized as a central regulator of general stress responses and population survival strategies. Extracellular membrane vesicles are nanoscale lipid bilayer structures carrying a diverse cargo of biomolecules and implicated in a broad range of biological processes. Importantly, vesicle biogenesis and cargo composition are highly regulated processes, shaped by the physiological state of the cells and their surrounding environment. In the present study, we investigated the impact of the CSP?ComDE QS system on vesicle biogenesis and protein cargo composition in S. mutans. S. mutans planktonic cells were cultivated in the absence and in the presence of the CSP pheromone (to mimic an environmental stress condition), and membrane vesicles were isolated at stationary growth phase. Membrane vesicle proteomic analysis was then performed to compare the protein cargo of membrane vesicles isolated from non-induced cultures and membrane vesicles isolated from CSP-induced cultures. The data obtained contribute to the understanding of the role of the CSP-ComDE QS system in membrane vesicle biogenesis and cargo composition in S. mutans. |
