Dataset Summary
TitleSperm proteome modifications during the post-testicular maturation in Apis mellifera drones
DescriptionDespite the biological importance of bees, no information of the sperm proteome during the completion of SV filling and the attainment of full sperm maturation in A. mellifera. Despite not finding differences in seminal vesicle sperm motility and viability between mature and immature drones, significant variations were identified at proteome. The results revealed a biphasic pattern characterized by a massive loss of proteins—particularly those involved in protein translation (ribonucleoprotein complexes) or post-translational modification processes (Golgi apparatus), electron transport chain (ETC) complexes and proteasome—and the preservation of a highly stable subset comprising various metabolic pathways and the flagellar structure in spermatozoa during drone maturation. This suggests the presence of tightly regulated quality-control mechanisms that maintain a precise balance between protein conservation with selective degradation. Moreover, the observed modulation of energy-related proteins, particularly the decreasing of complexes I, III and V of the ETC, may represent an adaptive strategy to enhance cellular longevity.
