Dataset Summary
| Title | Evaluation of Acute and Subacute Toxicity of Plant Cell Cultures of Scurvy Grass (Cochlearia danica) and Rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) as Food by Oral Administration in Mice |
| Description | Plant cell culture (PCC) technology is currently being developed to produce plant foods partially decoupled from traditional agriculture practices. By now, the safety of the ingredients produced by PCC technology for food or nutritional purposes has to be tested. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the oral safety and toxicity of two novel plant cell cultures, scurvy grass (SG) (Cochlearia danica) and rowan (RW) (Sorbus aucuparia), as well as to characterize the macro and micronutrient quality including proteomic profiles to identify potential allergens. The acute and subacute toxicity profiles of the PCC samples (SG and RW) were evaluated based on OECD guidelines. For the both samples, the lethal dose (LD)50 values were determined to be above 2000 mg/kg. Meanwhile, the results of the repeated oral exposure of SG for the 28-days subacute toxicity study did not show evidence of mortality nor any significant alterations in clinical observations. SG administration at 1000 mg/kg and above increased levels of white blood cells and/or granulocytes, along with a higher relative weight of liver and/or lung tissues. However, the histological evaluation of the liver and lung samples revealed no significant histopathological changes, and all measured biochemical parameters were comparable to healthy control mice. In the subacute toxicity study of RW cell cultures, no mortality and alterations in clinical and haematological parameters were observed. A significant decrease in plasma glucose levels was noted for mice administered RW, while elevated levels of sodium and/or potassium were observed in mice administered 1000 mg/kg and 2000 mg/kg RW, which indicate possible kidney toxicity. Nevertheless, the organ-body weight ratio and histopathological assessments of the kidneys and other organs were comparable to the healthy control mice. Overall, these findings contribute to the toxicological profile of SG and RW cell cultures, suggesting that the consumption of these PCCs could be considered safe and non-toxic. |
