Dataset Summary
TitleComparative growth and proteomic analysis of Gardnerella leopoldii, G. Piotii and G. vaginalis biofilms
DescriptionDespite the high global burden of bacterial vaginosis (BV) and its negative reproductive sequelae, its pathogenesis remains obscure. Until recently, the Gardnerella genus which has been proposed to play a pivotal role in BV pathogenesis likely via biofilm initiation, was considered monotypic. This paradigm shifted with the recognition of species heterogeneity within the Gardnerella genus. Here, biofilm growth and proteomes of three Gardnerella species isolates G. vaginalis, G. leopoldii, and G. piotii were examined. Important findings included cysteine synthase (cysK) being identified among the top upregulated proteins in the robust biofilms produced by G. leopoldii and G. piotii compared to G. vaginalis, which produced biofilms of significantly lower biomass and viability. Proteomic analysis identified significant differences in functional pathways and virulence proteins. By identifying potential drivers of differential biofilm formation among these different Gardnerella species, this study underscores the significance of Gardnerella heterogeneity in the understanding of BV pathogenesis.
