This study assesses the crude protein mix from whole mealworms as an alternative to the traditionally used chlorinated organic solvents for the extraction of the greenest biodegradable biopolymers emerging on the market - polyhydroxyalkanoates. The biopolymers recovered were of comparable quality to those recovered by CHCl3 extraction, as determined by GPC and NMR. Crude protein mix exceeded the efficiency of commercial enzymes at up to 10-fold lower enzyme load. Therefore, this approach is not only a safer, non-toxic alternative to traditional organic solvents, but also an economically viable option. A proteomic study of the mealworm proteins after growth on 100% bran (TM mix control) and on 100% Cupravidus necator biomass (TM mix 2) was performed to identify enzymes responsible for the recovery effect.
