Update publication information. In this project, differential serum proteins (DEPs) were first screened in MM patients and healthy controls using iTRAQ labeling coupled with 2D LC-MS/MS method. As a result, 475 proteins were identified, of which, 327 proteins contain at least two unique peptides, and 145 DEPs were found between MM patients and healthy controls. Besides, all the identified proteins were subjected to bioinformatic analysis by using the Gene Ontology(GO) database, the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes Genomes(KEGG)database and the Cluster of Orthologous Groups of proteins(COG) database to find the relative processes that these proteins were involved in. Furthermore, function enrichment analysis (GO enrichment and KEGG enrichment) of these DEPs showed enrichment in several biological pathways which can characterize the most significant functional roles and related pathways. Candidate protein biomarkers were selected for subsequent validation in large cohorts of patients with asbestos related diseases by ELISA assay. Our findings indicated that Serum FLNA, FBLN1 and TSP-1 might be promising candidates for diagnosis of MM and screening of at-risk individuals.
