TitleA natural solution from caterpillar cuticles for flexible impact-resistant materials
DescriptionFlexible impact-resistant materials are essential for applications in defense, transportation, and biomedical engineering due to their ability to combine strength, energy dissipation, and compliance under impact. While nature offers robust solutions like the rigid armor of beetle elytra or the impact-resistant hammer of mantis shrimp, designing materials that achieve these properties simultaneously remains a significant challenge. In this study, we explore the energy dissipation mechanism in the cuticle of Ostrinia furnacalis (Asian corn borer), a natural model for flexible, impact-resistant materials. We identify two key structural proteins, FCSP-1 and FCSP-2, which interact to form a β-sheet-rich matrix through liquid-liquid phase separation, adhering to the chitin scaffold. This matrix not only promotes the formation of a lamellar structure that enhances energy dissipation but also dissipates energy via hydrogen bond disruption and secondary structure transformation under stress. Nuclear magnetic resonance and molecular dynamics simulations of representative peptides further confirm that matrix formation is governed by the fine-tuning of hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, and π-π or cation-π interactions. Inspired by this natural mechanism, we developed a chitin-protein composite hydrogel with an energy dissipation capability of 8 MJ/m3, and its mechanical properties can be precisely tuned via in vitro phosphorylation. This hydrogel demonstrates exceptional potential for protecting fragile objects.
