Dataset Summary
TitleRibosomal stress responses in bacteria under starvation and hypoxia
DescriptionBacteria survive stressful conditions by using protective mechanisms such as ribosome hibernation, where specialised proteins called hibernation factors protect inactive ribosomes from degradation. Although these factors were thought to be highly conserved across bacteria, our evolutionary, proteomic, and structural analyses revealed that they are far more diverse than previously recognised. We found that many bacteria possess structurally distinct hibernation-related proteins that respond to specific stresses such as hypoxia, while over 10% of representative bacterial species lack all currently known hibernation factors entirely. Using cryo-EM analysis of one such species, Asaia platycodi, we showed that these bacteria instead display alternative ribosomal stress responses, suggesting that many ribosome hibernation mechanisms remain undiscovered.
