| Title | Proteome Contributions to Enteritis Reduction in Non- and Soy- Selected Rainbow Trout on Fed A Soy-Supplemented Diet |
| Description | A soy-tolerant selected and non-selected domesticated rainbow trout strain were fed a fishmeal-based control diet or a soy-based diet to evaluate proteomic changes related to susceptibility and resistance to soybean-meal induced enteritis. Fish were sampled at two months, an early timepoint which previously has been shown to precede enteritis development, and at 7 months, when signs of clinical enteritis have previously been detected in unselected strains on a plant-based diet. Intestinal samples were characterized by histological examination and showed that at two months there was no difference between the strains reared on either diet, but at 7 months the unselected control strain fed the plant-based feed exhibited significant immune cell infiltration and cellular damage to the submucosa and lamina propria within the control strain. No such infiltration or damage was seen in the selected, soy-tolerant strain fed the plant-based diet. At both time points, plasma and intestinal samples were taken and then analyzed using shotgun proteomics. Proteome data revealed differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) which may mechanistically contribute to reduced enteritis in the soy-tolerant strain, including proteins involved in modulation of apoptosis, inflammation, immunity, glucose regulation, and accelerated protein turnover. |
