TitleComparative proteomic analysis of seed germination between allotetraploid cottons Gossypium hirsutum and Gossypium barbadense
DescriptionSeed germination, a key initial event in the plant life cycle, directly affects the yield and quality of cotton. Gossypium barbadense and Gossypium hirsutum are gradually evolved through polyploidization resulting in different characteristics, and the existence of this interspecific variation lacks genetic and molecular explanation. In this study, we compared the proteomes between G. barbadense and G. hirsutum during seed germination. In all we identified 2741 proteins for G. barbadense and 3759 proteins for G. hirsutum. Through functional enrichment, we found that seeds germinate by first repairing damaged DNA and proteins, as well as mobilizing stored substances such as carbohydrates, proteins and lipids for energy production to initiate life activities, followed by progressive development through cell division and other processes. We also performed homology analysis and found 21711 orthogroups including 2761 species-specific orthogroups for G. hirsutum and 527 ones for G. barbadense. Further differential analysis in 915 single-copy orthogroups between the two cottons was conducted, indicating that most of the differentially expressed proteins in G. barbadense were related to carbon metabolism, while most of the differentially expressed proteins in G. hirsutum were associated with stress response.
